The capital of this department, Chachapoyas, was founded in 1,538 by Alonso de Alvarado. In the same year, its first church was built and then, the Santa Ana's Church, San Lazaro and Señor de Burgos were built. In April 1821, the Chachapoyas' inhabitants ignored and exiled the spanish authorities following the steps taken by the San Martín's Liberating Army. The department of Amazonas was strictly linked to the emancipating thoughts and actions. The cleric Toribio Rodriguez de Mendoza was its most outstanding representative and the man who encouraged all patriotic generation in the concepts of Nation and Peru, he was also one of the thinkers who signed the National Act of Independence. The Cordillera del Condor is located in this department and was the scenery of the conflict between Peru and Ecuador in 1981.
