History:

The oldest evidence of knowledge about the presence of gold in Peru was found in this department in relation to the Muyu-Mogo Culture dated 1,500-1800 a. C.

The Wari was a very developed Age with a constant increasing of population and many inhabited places of agriculturists and shepherds. The brave Chancas lived in the zone of Apurimac, they were the most firm rivals of the Incas who were finally defeated in Yahuarpampa by Pachacutec.

The Inca was a very developed Age as proved by the Choquequiras ruins or beautiful ceremonial centers like Saywite.

The Spaniards founded the City of Abancay, which is the city of the department, in 1574.
