History:

With the discovery of fossil remains in the Piquimachay Caves and surroundings of the Pacaicassa town, it has been demonstrated that the primitive man was established in Ayacucho more than 20000 years ago. The feature writers indicate the Polcras as the most important nation that existed in Huamanga since long time ago. The Wari Culture was developed in the province of Huanta until they were assimilated for the Incas' expansion. The Wiracocha Inca conquered the region finding a strong opposition by local tribes. In some historic compilations, it is stated that one rebellion occured against the inca authority which was appeased with huge massacres by the Incas. Due to that mortality caused by the battles, this place was named Ayacucho which in quechua means "Rincon de los Muertos".

The Spaniards found very organized and working towns with a high sense of communal work. Due to the peace in this zone, many soldiers established here until Alonso de Alvarado and Francisco de Cardenas, due to an order of Pizarro look for the most appropriate place to found an intermediate city between Lima and Cusco, so the city of Ayacucho was founded in 1539.

The San Cristobal de Huamanga University (Viceregal Age) was founded in 1677. This city was the birthplace of the most outstanding heroine María Parado de Bellido who took place in the battle for the Independence. The Independence of Peru and American was consolidated in the Battle of Ayacucho (December 9, 1824).

One of the most outstanding men who was born in Ayacucho was Andrés Avelino Cáceres, hero of the War against Chile and President of the Republic in 1886 and 1894.
