Previous to pottery, there was already a High Culture in Huánuco as observed in places like Kotosh or Piruru in Tantamayo. There are also evidences of old primitive hunters who inhabited the high zones of Lauricocha and developed a fine rupestrian art. Some pre-ceramic temples belonging to the Mito culture like the famous temple of "Manos Cruzadas" were found in Kotosh. A pottery called Wayra Sirka (1800 B.C.), which is related to the oldest potteries of the continent, has also been identified. After a cultural sequence in which the influence of Chavin (1000 B.C.) is felt in Huánuco, a regional culture known as Higueras is formed. Actually, it is not known yet what happened about 1000 A.D. when remains of buildings which are of sepulchral type with several floors, appeared in Tantamayo. The Inca Conquest was established on them and build its provincial capital in the heights of Huánucopampa.
