 Geography:

From the morphological point of view, it can be distinguished the following zones: the
delta formed by the Tumbes and Zarumilla rivers; an alluvial plain to the north of the
Tumbes river, with dry, low-deep ravines; ancient terraces that has been strongly eroded
at the zone of Máncora and the relief of Amotape to the east and south, with its ending
point at the El Barco Mountain, at 1,520 meters above sea level. The littoral presents low
coasts in the north sector and to the south there are also beaches with low altitude
ravines. The submarine bottom in front of Tumbes River's Delta has little depth and when
the tide falls down, there appear little sandy keys, which by easy stages get covered by
manglares vegetation, to form new "esteros". The vegetation that cover its
territory is varied: the manglares, the plains and the dry forest with many trees.
This frontier department is the exit gate to Equator. It is
the smallest in extent, but its geopolitical location gives it a first order importance.
