History:

The archaeology of Tumbes is not enough studied. However, we know that there are two very ancient ceramics eras, known as San Juan and Pechiche, which are contemporaries with Mocholille and Chorrera of Equator and with Añañique and Cupisnique in Peru, and furthermore, it is related to all of them.

Later, there developed the Garbanzal Culture, between the years 500 B.C and 500 A.D., epoch in which this was replaced by a culture related to the Milagro Culture from the Guayas region.

The Inca Empire extended its dominions up to Tumbes and this became the contact point between the Tahuantinsuyo and the european civilization. On January 07, 1821, the people of Tumbes proclaimed its liberty.

In 1941, during the conflict with Equator, took place the Battle of Zarumilla, which gave a great and clear triumph for the Peruvian Army.
